Where Drivers Get One
There are three usual routes, and they suit different people.
- Buy your own. Cheapest over years, if you have the money or the finance and you want to own a car.
- Rent from a company that rents to rideshare drivers. You pay by the week and hand the car back when you stop.
- Go through a partner scheme attached to the app itself. Availability for these comes and goes, and it varies by city.
Renting suits people who are starting out, driving for a season, or who cannot get finance yet. It is also the only one of the three you can undo easily.
What The Car Has To Meet
Both apps publish rules on how old the car can be and what condition it has to be in, and those rules differ by state. A car that qualifies in one city may not in another.
If you are renting, this stops being your problem. A company that rents to rideshare drivers keeps its cars on the right side of those rules, because otherwise nobody could drive them.
The Thing People Get Caught Out By
Most ordinary hire cars may not be used for rideshare work at all. It is written into the agreement, and the cheap weekly deal you found online is usually one of those.
So check that the rental you are signing is meant for driving, not for holidays.
Is A Hybrid Worth It For Rideshare?
For most drivers in a city, yes, because fuel is the cost you carry yourself and rideshare driving is mostly the slow stop-start sort. That is the driving a hybrid handles best.
It matters more the more hours you do. Somebody driving two evenings a week will notice it less than somebody driving every day.
How It Works At MCSyo
Every car we rent is a Toyota hybrid, by the week, with unlimited kilometres and no cap on distance. Rideshare driving is what the cars are for, so there is no question of whether you are allowed.
